This is a story that I needed to tell, because I've got so much nervous energy right now. There is slight violence, so if you don't like that kind of thing you don't have to read it.
Today at my middle school, there was a protest against sexual harassment. Everyone who supported the protest wore teal or blue, including me. A lot of people made signs (I used some of them in the project) and gathered on the front lawn when second period started. At first, it was great. I was watching it from the library windows (on the second floor) because my mom wouldn't let me participate. The kids were standing in groups and milling around, talking and waving their signs. There were some teachers standing around, supervising to make sure no one left school property, and lots of people were taking pictures. Then, the crowd got rowdier. Lots of people started shouting things, and the crowd surged around in a giant group that was rapidly becoming a mob. The teachers started blowing their whistles, and yelling for the kids to settle down. Have you ever seen a fight? Well, one happened. Then another. And another. The teachers tried to break them up, but the mob of kids was too big. All I could do was watch and hope that my friends were all right. I'm in third period now, and my teacher gave us free time because it's such a crazy day. I am really glad that I stayed away from the protest. It was a great message, and one that needed to be sent, but it ended REALLY badly. I'm still worried about my friends who went out there to fight sexual harassment, and got caught up in a physical fight instead. I don't know how recess and lunch are going to happen, because I can still hear yelling and whistles blowing. I just hope everyone is safe.
