When cats touch, they produce kittens that (due to mutation) have slightly different fitness than their parents. Greater fitness changes the fur color and makes them live longer. When "mutation" is high, fitness changes more each time a cat is born. When "selection" is on, cats with higher fitness live longer. When "selection" is off, all cats have the same lifespan.
