Recently, I've discovered that many people don't understand the Catholic view of the world. I've been called homophobic, racist, and satanic, among other things. So this Christmas season, I've decided to show the world a new perspective- the Catholic one. During the season of Advent, Catholics remember how the Jews waited for the Messiah to come, and how we are still waiting for the Messiah to come again the second time. One way of celebration I use is an Advent Calendar, however, Catholics also celebrate by lighting a wreath of candles, and adding a candle as each week progresses. I, personally, do both, however, I'll stick to the wreath for this project. The wreath holds three purple candles and one pink one, along with an optional white candle in the middle (see below). Each week also has a new theme. Week One: Hope. We remember the hope the Jews had, and the hope we have today. This is celebrated with a purple candle. Week Two: Peace. We remember how Jesus brought peace to the world by allowing us access to heaven, and in the end will bring peace to the world. This is celebrated with a purple candle. Week Three: Joy. This week remembers Mary the mother of Jesus as well, and it starts with Gaudete Sunday, which means rejoice in Latin. It remembers the joy of Jesus' birth, along with the joy of reaching halfway through Advent. This is celebrated with a pink candle. Week Four: Love. On this final week before the Feast of the Nativity (Christmas), we remember the love that God had to send down his son to earth. This is celebrated with a purple candle. The White Candle: Some Catholics add a white candle in the middle and light it on Christmas Eve.
