~ For the January Writing Camp (JWC) ~ Art & Writing: @Astrid_da_potato - Please don't steal! 1) Cabin Wars #2 Word Count: 356 2) Cabin Wars #3 Word Count: 490 1) Have you ever wondered what it would be like to predict the future? Well, in When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead, 12-year-old Miranda started receiving notes, each one coming true in impossible ways. The mysterious writer of these notes told her to write a letter, and that someone was going to die. With these terse instructions, Miranda discovered that she may be the only one left that can save this person’s life. Packed with action, mystery, twists, and suspense, When You Reach Me is a phenomenal book in many ways. Paul Sweeney once said, “You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you’ve lost a friend.” In this case, it definitely does. Rebecca Stead exhibits an ability to not only make you interested in the book but also develop an empathy for the life-like characters. As the plot moves forward, a reader can see the characters developing, each of their own hopes and dreams. Rebecca Stead is especially skilled at character development, creating suspense, using important themes, and keeping the reader’s interest. In addition to that, she added time travel as an important theme in this book, not only helping the plot move forward but also making the reader more intrigued. However, despite this book’s many positive aspects, there are still a few unfavorable parts of When You Reach Me. For example, there are a few conversations that are potentially hard to follow, especially those that discuss time. There are also several violent scenes throughout the story, like when Marcus punched Sal and the laughing man got run over by a car. Despite this, When You Reach Me is a fabulous read and I would recommend it for sure. Overall, I would give this book five out of five stars. Ultimately, When You Reach Me is a phenomenal read that I would suggest to anyone above the age of eight. With its many positive factors, this book is a definite page-turner. If you like drama, time travel, mystery, and suspense, When You Reach Me is undoubtedly the book for you! 2) Virtual reality is now used in healthcare to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, and several other symptoms. Although many people may be skeptical of the advantages of virtual reality, there is no denying that this recent breakthrough has many benefits. Virtual reality is beneficial to human intelligence because of various reasons. It is not only appealing because of safety and economic concerns, but it is also convenient and entertaining. Virtual reality is especially beneficial to human intelligence because it is advantageous to keeping people safe and saving money. It could train people for jobs that would otherwise be risky. One example could be using virtual reality technology to train a pilot. When pilots learn to fly for the first time, they could make fatal mistakes. Virtual reality can prevent that by creating an environment where pilots can learn to fly safely. This would be especially useful because the pilot can alter their environment according to their needs and pause anytime they want, something impossible to do on a real plane. In addition to that, using virtual reality to train pilots would also save money that could be used for different purposes. Instead of buying actual planes, government officials could use that money for uses like environmental issues. Ultimately, virtual reality is exceptionally beneficial because it appeals to human safety and economical concerns. Not only does virtual reality help keep humans safe, but it also helps make lives easier by providing convenient alternatives. For example, if someone wanted to travel while in a situation that prohibits that, all they’d have to do was turn on the virtual reality and visit the place they wanted to go. Of course, the experience wouldn’t be identical to being there in person, but it would save time and money. It would help inspire one’s creativity by creating a world where one would feel as if they were actually there, disregarding several factors like smell, touch, and taste. Virtual reality would act as an immersive experience for children and adults alike. Thus, virtual reality is very helpful because of its convenience. However, people may state that virtual reality could serve as a distraction or an addiction for those who use it for entertainment. This view is valid because sometimes when people overuse something, it could become an addiction, which could be detrimental to human health. However, something only becomes harmful when it is overused. Using virtual reality is similar to eating junk food. It is something that can be done, but only once in a while. With these restrictions, people can safely enjoy the many entertaining traits of virtual reality. (Continued below)
Ultimately, this is why virtual reality is beneficial to human intelligence. It serves as a solution to safety and economical issues, inconvenience, and entertainment. This breakthrough could act as a milestone, inspiring even more ideas that would lead to the advancement of human technology. Besides, who wouldn’t want something that is entertaining, helpful to society, and useful?
