There's another VERY long description for this project (similar to how long it was in my Quarter Finals entry), and I highly recommend reading all of it to understand the full meaning behind this song. "Apprise Me" is an original song of mine that was initially a jazz blues (in F) scale that I came up with entirely for jazz band. However, I liked the original tune so much that I decided to incorporate elements of it in a separate song that I would actually share with others. And since I'm a saxophonist, I finally realized that I've never actually used my saxophone in previous original songs, so it was the perfect opportunity to try something new by creating a saxophone solo for this song. (It's also very fun to create original harmonies with an alto-saxophone.) Another thing that was enjoyable was creating guitar melodies and drum beats virtually, because I love having extra elements in all of my songs. I used minimal strings in this original song because it didn't necessarily fit the vibe, but it still added onto the overall melody. This song has a distinct 4/4 chorus but the verses are all in a distinctive 3/8 (you could also consider it a 3/4 depending on how you see the tempo changing). This variation in the time signature gives it a unique feel. Additionally, there are key changes in this song that vary between the F blues, F# blues, and G blues. The constant differentiation in the key signature adds more variation and "color" to the piece. Finally. The lyrics of this song. The lyrics in this song are probably the most meaningful lyrics I've ever written. While I do love the lyrics in songs such as "Rectification" and "Darker By Dusk," I didn't write them with a connection to my own life. This song's lyrics have a direct connection to events that have taken place, and I can say that "Apprise Me" was pretty much a coping mechanism for me. The lyrics are very valuable to me and I had to get them out there, I had to write about how I felt. To sum up this song in a good quote (shortened for the purposes of the thumbnail): "People change, feelings fade, promises are broken, but memories last forever." While people grow and are altered by events in their lives, most memories last a long time. Feelings do fade, like scars. Eventually they go away. Promises are definitely broken. Unfortunately, many of the promises we make don't end up lasting. However, memories do. And many of those memories, whether they're good or bad, don't go away. Like in the example of this song, it can really be painful sometimes. But it's inevitable, so you have no other choice than to push through it. Anyway, this is an entry for the SGT V Semi-Finals; I'm so happy to have gotten the opportunity to make it this far. I wish the best of luck to those who I am competing against and, who knows, maybe I'll make it into the final round. This song took an incredible amount of effort to bring it to where it is now, and I couldn't be prouder of it. There's more... Below is the song's lyrics and the official credits. Lyrics: Apprise me if I meant anything to you Were all of the things you said quite untrue? We were so close, not even a clue That you’d be a traitor, now I hope you’re blue Everything was fine, I know that you cared Needed me, needed you, all that we shared You’ve made a cloud of dust, and left me behind Wish I had seen it coming, but gosh, I was blind Made a million memories, can I forget? Don't need you in my head, I hope you regret What you did to me, did to us, ruined what we had ‘Cause you couldn't handle the truth, I hope you’re feeling bad Apprise me if all the things you said were real I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel But I promise that I know how I'm gonna deal With your betrayal, I’ve got a mind of steel I know that you’re not really sorry Said that you understood but you don’t get me All that you left is the pain in my heart You know how I feel? No, don’t even start Now that you’re gone I’ll try and move on Just a small phase So glad I caught on Now that you’re gone I’ll try and move on Was never meant to last So glad I caught on Gotta face it — we have nothing to say No, you wouldn’t even choose to stay I know that you don’t care anyway Well, let me tell you something — just stay away Apprise me the truth, were you out of your mind? I’d always known you to be very kind The things that you said, our lives intertwined Now I’m a blank slate, my life’s undefined Guess you couldn’t care enough To stay when life got rough, gotta make things tough I’m making a new story And you won’t be in it, I’ll have all my glory While you’re freezing in the cold I’ll be letting go of the past, making myself into solid gold Impenetrable so I can’t be broken Let what happened remain unspoken Credits: - Me (@-Firesnake-) for lyrics, production, recording, and vocals - Canva for the thumbnail - Soundtrap for being a great editing software - The following beta-listeners: @CelloDog17 @CrystalKeeper7 @RainbowGeckos - @avicodicat, @Elephant_Lover, @etcrj, and @The-Book-Worm for being the judges and guest judges of SGT V If you press "see inside" and head to the sound tab in the backdrops, you can access the official backtrack/instrumental non-vocal audio for "Apprise Me."
