R15 subway car made by me (GDashLevelMker) Grand Central Station vector is owned by @TheCrimsonJ88 The R15 is a NYC Subway car built by American Car and Foundry in 1950 for the New York City Board of Transportation. The R15 is built to IRT specifications, only to be run on the A division. It is the second subway car to feature circle "porthole" door windows. They were manufactured as single units, meaning they can be operated independently without the use of other cars, and can be intermixed with similar IRT car types. These cars were placed into service on February 4th, 1950 on the 7 line in solid consists. These cars ran exclusively on the 7 line until the arrival of the R33 and R36 cars, which pushed them over to the main line (1,2,3,4,5,6). Once on the mainline IRT, they were mixed with other R12s, R14s, R21s, and R22s. Because of mechanical similarities, they were able to run with each other with little to no issues. Upon the arrival of the R62/A cars, they were gradually phased out of service. The last R15 car ran in a consist with other car types on December 10th, 1984. After this, many were taken off property to be scrapped, but a handful of cars were converted into rider cars after retirement. Car 6239 was taken out of service in 1976 and has been preserved by the New York Transit Museum since then. The rest of the R15 work cars were sunk as artificial reefs in 2009.
