Chapter one- Melanie Melanie knew that the kid was different. Different like her. He moved with a strange kind of grace, seeming to know what would happen right before it did. Like the times he wove through the hall, not touching a single other kid (Which was a real achievement at this school). Like how he always seemed to know exactly when the teacher would enter the classroom. Like how he could choose random answers on a multiple-choice test and get a perfect grade. He didn't even have to take the non-multiple choice tests, because of his dyslexia. Of course, Melanie had dyslexia too, and did she get out of tests? No. Mellie had been at this school for a week, and this kid stuck out. She had been told that there was a half-blood here, this kid had to be it. Maybe an Apollo? She pondered this, but the Apollo kids with prophecy powers were different. She had to recruit the kid and get back to camp- Aphrodite cabin was having some idiotic fashion show, and she got roped in, and if she didn't get back in time, Sparrow might be mad at her. She didn't want Sparrow mad at her... so back to the task at hand. She was certain by this point of two things: Aspen Miller was a demigod. And Opal, the pretty brunette kid, was an empousa. Also, Aspen would turn thirteen soon, so Melanie didn't doubt that Opal- if that was even her real name- knew what Aspen was. She would have to tell him today- sure, it could put him at more risk, but she couldn't allow for the empousa to get to Aspen first. The bell rang; P.E. started. Mellie took a deep breath, prayed to Athena and whatever other gods were listening, and walked towards Aspen.
