It was getting darker by the second, and the late leaf-bare moon was already casting her silver light over acres of shadowy woodland. Melandogs were slinking along the edges of the borders, far beyond the shivering cats of Nightclan. Inside camp, apprentices, kits, queens, warriors, and medicine cats alike were sheltering in their comfortable dens from the looming night. The terrifying time when Melandogs are rumored to prowl nearer the forest. Though this theory wasn't proved, the dark night always brought dark thoughts to the cats. Flamingnova, her newborn kits violently trembling in the fierce cold, quietly wrapped her tail around her sons and put them to sleep with a few comforting words and a “goodnight, Smudge and Dragon”. Their father entered the den swiftly and silently, and settled in with his kin. As the sun rose the next morning, Flamingnova rose from her paws. Stretching and yawning, she stepped out into the tingling rays of sun to find her paws buried in yet another layer of thick snow. This leaf-bare had already carried at least five other snowfalls, and the queen couldn’t bare the seeping frost ebbing into her fur and settling around her delicate skin. Realizing with a jolt that her kits weren’t huddled underneath her, she wildly stared around to find Smudgekit and Dragonkit giggling wildly as they rolled round and round in the snowflakes. ‘At least they are enjoying the snow’, Flamingnova thought, and though her mood was bitter, her spirits lifted with rays of joy and hope, her eyes on her two additions to a new generation. ‘Mum, could we go out and play outside camp? Oh, please, mum?’ Dragonkit pleaded, landing splayed in front of his mother as Smudge triumphantly flung him off off himself. Smudgekit paused his attack on his brother and pricked his ears. With a soft little laugh, Flamingnova answered gently, ‘It is safer if you stay inside. Especially during leaf-bare. Do you think you could wait just one more moon for new-leaf to come? Could you just wait one more moon, for me?’ ‘But, mum, that’s the point! This is the only time we’ll be able to play in the snow outside of camp before we’re apprenticed!’ Dragonkit moaned enviously. "Next leaf-bare we'll be apprentices when we play in the snow!' This was a fair argument. ‘I’ll have to talk to your father, first. And Ptarmiganstar. Maybe later, alright?’ ‘Pwease pwease pwease pwease pweaaaase??’ Dragonkit bawled, tugging at his mother’s fur. Trying to make himself useful, Smudgekit added, ‘Please, mum?’, and rubbed his cheek against Nova’s paw, giving a quick purr. Flamingnova sighed deeply, and licked Cometflight awake with her rough tongue. With a prolonged groan, Comet stretched and rose to his paws. 'What is it?' 'The kits want to go out... again. I can't deal with them! They'll pull all my fur.' Cometflight gave a soft chuckle, and padded outside to join the kits' playfight... (cont. in notes and credits)
(cont. from instructions) ...After a few minutes, the three cats untangled themselves and Comet dignified himself. 'So, I heard that you guys won't leave your mother alone,' he said, individually fixing them with a stern gaze. 'What is it that you are so desperate for?' 'Oh, pa, could we please go out and play in the snow outside of camp? Please, pa?' Dragonkit mewled, unfailing to grasp yet another moment to ask for his dream. 'And you?' Comet addressed Smudgepaw. Smudge beamed up at his father, standing up and lifting his tail hopefully. Cometflight swiveled around to Nova again, and now the pleading gleam lay in his eyes. 'Just for the day? I won't take my eyes off of them,' Comet vowed, and when Flamingnove looked exasperated and doubtful, Cometflight added, 'Oh, it'll be alright! Come on, they really want to! Let them have a carefree day of exploring and fun! They deserve it.' 'Well...' 'Pleaaase?' Dragon, Smudge, and Comet trilled in unison. 'Alright, fine. But come back before sundown!' 'Okay, we promise!' Dragon called back to his mother as the three cats disappeared into the bushes. Flamingnova heaved a deep, long sigh, and returned into the queen's den. Hours passed, and the bright yellow sphere that was the wintry sun sailed up and over the sky. It was soon to be sundown, and Nova was expecting her family home soon. Standing in the entrance of the den, she calmly gazed out into the woods. Quite suddenly, a terrible yowl resounded through the forest. A terribly familiar yowl. Comet. Flamingnova leapt two fox-lengths into the air and, as if she were being chased by a Melandog, sprinted lightning fast into the forest. ‘Comet!!!’ She screeched desperately, and nothing and no one else mattered in the world to her in that moment other than her family. Not the brambles scraping painfully at her sides while the queen was fighting her way through the wild woods. Not the freezing cold snow churning icily under her paws, paralyzing them with cold. Not the flashing eyes of the Melandogs around her that seemed to follow her across the undergrowth. And there, in the roots of a tall maple tree, were Smudgekit and Dragonkit. And there, in front of them, was Comet. Lying on his side, he forced himself to his paws once more with a moan of pain. Dragging himself in front of the kits, the tom sheltered his babies with his own body, boldly facing the Melandogs. Flamingnova acted swiftly. Launching herself on top of the nearest Melandog, she screeched her battle cry and clawed, powered by fear and fury, at the Melandog’s eyes. Her fireflies were gone. They must have flown off her necklace chasing away the Melandogs behind her as she ran through the forest. Yelping in pain with a scratch along it's nose, the Melandog shook off Nova as if she were simply an annoying little bug of no importance. The she-cat was flung aside, and grunted with the collision against the ground. The Melandog didn’t stop to think. And in one quick swipe of it’s large paw, the vicious Melandog ended the fight. This is when the real truth and nature of Melandogs hit the family of cats. Melandogs harm. They don’t feel. They don’t think. They kill and they slaughter cats by the dozens just like cats kill and slaughter mice by the dozens. Except this time, the cats were the prey. Comet’s breath was coming in shallow. He was already seriously injured from his fight with the Melandog. He looked helplessly up, his face covered in silent tears. He croaked something that sounded like a plea for mercy. Yet the Melandog doesn’t feel merciful, and it shoves Comet ruthlessly aside. It snatched up Dragonkit, getting ready to rip the kit apart. Smudgepaw was petrified with fear, but leapt up to grab Dragon’s tail. He couldn’t lose his only brother! He wouldn’t let him go! Alas, what could a helpless kit do against a giant Melandog? He’s already used his 1 firefly that he had when he first went into the forest. Comet was dead. His wounds were too large to heal after his battle with Melandogs. His fireflies, too, got used up in the process, which is how he ended up fighting in the first place. And just like that, Smudge’s family was gone. And nothing would ever be the same again. Ever. Because he would never playfight Dragon. He would never curl up in the comforting fluff of his mother’s belly. And he would never enjoy another evening with his father. Sorry for the horrible writing, but all in all he's now depressed bean who got this shy and quiet because of the experiences of his childhood. He has mild PTSD, and frequently has nightmares/has flashbacks of his mother falling to the ground and being ripped apart and his father's sides rising and falling slower and slower until they stop. ________________________________________________ [ " Tuning out of ' Smudge's File ' " ] " Thanks for reading this far!
