Press the buttons to access different upgrades. It is recommended that you upgrade in order (top to bottom and then to the next slot), as that was how the game was designed to be. Upgrades don't stack, the last upgrade bought overrides any similar upgrades. For example, if you buy an upgrade that gives $4 per second first, and then buy an upgrade that gives $1 per second, you don't get $5 per second, you only get $1 per second.
