I'm finally trying to use layer settings! It makes the lighting and shading so much better. If you press space or click/tap, there is a version of the image where I changed all the layer settings back to normal and it looked like someone spilled muddy water on it. Then I made an attempt to fix the colors, but it definitely looks best with the layers being set to different settings. (The settings I used were multiply for shading, glow & soft glow for the lighting, and a little bit bit of soft light for some of the highlights)
