I thought I’d post this concept I had lately in the wake of the hype for the February 2022 Nintendo Direct, which I must admit to sharing, what with stuff like Nintendo Switch Sports and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass. So, what if, alongside Super Mario 3D All-Stars (which is great because I can finally play Super Mario Sunshine without having to hunt eBay for a Gamecube!), Nintendo announced a collection of remasters of classic 2D Mario games for the Switch too? I would call it “Super Mario 2D All-Stars” to distinguish it from both the aforementioned 3D collection and All-Stars for the SNES. It would include Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3, the Lost Levels, Super Mario Advance 4’s e-Reader levels (under the moniker Super Mario Bros. 3: The Extra World), Super Mario World, and Mario Bros. Classic (inspired by the GBA port), all ported to the Switch hardware in widescreen with high quality sound and support for the NES and SNES controllers for Nintendo Switch Online. Oh, and the Music Mode in the menus. I have more possibilities in mind, so stay tuned! And yes, this was partly inspired by Sonic Origins. I’ll just buy it for Sonic 3 & Knuckles like I did for Mario 3D All-Stars above, but I’m excited for it in every other way!
All aforementioned games, including all of the Mario ones, and Nintendo DSi Shop theme belong to Nintendo. Nintendo DSi Shop 8-bit remix made by Tater-Tot Tunes. Screenshots sources mostly from MobyGames and Super Mario Wiki, and edited by me on Procreate with a custom brush.
