My entry is a short story titled "The Girl Who Danced in the Rain". <3 ☂ Juliet sat at her window sill, gazing out at the green expanse in front of her. It was very early, the dawn light just barely peeking over the horizon. She longed for these special moments by herself, early in the morning, before her aunt woke her up. She was thinking about beautiful things, and candy, and if her grandmother was still here. She was watching a fox silently saunter into a thicket when her aunt, Miss Thornton, banged on Juliet’s door. “The other girls will be up for breakfast soon! GET OUT HERE!” “I’m coming!” Juliet put on her brown lace-up boots. She loved the way they clacked on the floor when she hopped and easily slid when she spun, even if they were a bit small and worn thin in places. She was already dressed, in her patched blue dress that was already getting too small and her red apron. Her long brown hair was tied back in a braid, the special yellow ribbon that she’d saved pennies for ages to buy at the end of it. Strands of hair were already slipping out of the braid and hanging around her face. (Juliet wasn’t the best at doing hair, especially her own.) She hurried out the door and down the rickety wooden ladder leading down from her attic bedroom, dashing to the dining hall. Juliet lived in a school for ballet that her aunt owned. It used to be her grandmother’s, but then she had gotten too old and passed it down to her daughter, Juliet’s mother (she had been a dancer for years), who then had died shortly after in a sailing accident. (Juliet had never known her father. He went missing at sea right after she’d been born.) The dance school had then been passed to Juliet’s stern aunt. Juliet was moved from her lovely yellow-walled bedroom to the attic, and treated more like a servant than a niece. Juliet skipped into the dining hall of the dance academy, spinning into the kitchens. "Good mornin' Julia!" said Lonnie, the cook who always forgot her name. "Morning, Lonnie," Juliet said cheerfully. She had a good feeling about today. She balanced three breakfast trays at a time, one in each hand and one on her head. The trays were heavy, but Juliet had incredible balance and years of practice. She slid them on to each table, most of the girls thanking her, but others just impatiently grabbing the breakfast from her without a word. When she was finished dishing out breakfast, she fed the animals and weeded the garden. It was mid spring, flowers popping up all around and colors bursting everywhere. Girls started filing outside for a lesson on herbs. Juliet watched them longingly for a few minutes. She always loved listening to the garden teachers talking about the different varieties of plants. A few droplets of rain splattered down on Juliet's nose. She looked up to see clouds flowing quickly through the sky, darkening out the sun. Raindrops pattered down onto leaves, thunder rumbling through the growing storm. Students were quickly herded back indoors to keep from getting wet, leaving Juliet by herself with the rain. Juliet didn't mind the rain. She loved the way it cascaded down and ran down her hair, face, and clothes. She tilted her head back and spun around happily, hopping into the puddles that were quickly flooding up into the courtyard. Leaping and spinning, her skirts flying out around her, Juliet smiled. She had been right. This was a wonderful day. ₍ᐢ.ˬ.⑅ᐢ₎ I hope that wasn't too long or anything. It's only a little bit of a novel that I'm writing. ^^ hugs, -sunny ╰──────── ♡ ────────╯
