DARKNESS - A Short Story(ish) TW: B1O0d and D3ath The dog growled softly, staring at the long scars running the length of her friend's body. "They're going to pay for that!" she snarled at the fleeing rogue animals, teeth bared. Stormy looked up with glazed blue eyes. "D-don't go..." she whimpered. "Stay w-with me, Scarlett!" The dog glanced toward the vague forms escaping, indecision and hatred flashing in her eyes. "Okay..." she whispered, turning back to Stormy. "I'll stay. For now." *Six months later...* Stormy stared in horror at the limp form slumped on the floor of the abandoned warehouse, Scarlett wiping crimson from her muzzle. "What have you done?" the she-cat whispered, heartbreak in her eyes. "I protected you!" Scarlett said, confused. "I made sure no one would ever hurt you again!" Stormy blinked back tears, a sob heaving at the back of her throat. "I never wanted this..." "What did you want?!" Scarlett growled exasperatedly. "This is the ONLY way we'll be safe." Her gaze softened and she licked Stormy's ear affectionately. "You are the only thing I care about, Stormy. I want to protect you." Stormy glanced up as though seeing her friend for the first time. "A flame can love a snowflake, but one will always hurt the other," she murmured. Hurt and anger sparked in Scarlett's eyes. "What are you saying, Stormy?!" "I'm leaving," Stormy whispered. "No, you aren't." *The next night* "Do you see now?" Scarlett murmured, running a paw down the metal bars separating her from the imprisoned she-cat. "I can rule this town; WE can rule this town! I don't want to do it without you, but I will if I have to." Stormy's vacant stare didn't leave the floor, tears cascading down her face. "We were friends, Scarlett," she breathed. "Why did you have to break everything?" Her mew rose to a shout. "WHY DID YOU K!LL HIM?!!" "He was the one who hurt you! All those months ago! He made those!" Scarlett pointed to the pale scars on both their faces. "... I didn't care." "What?!" "I forgave him. That's what you should have done." The dog shook her head with a snarl. "You'll never see things my way. Goodbye, Stormy." The door closed on darkness. The she-cat looked up, droplets of salt water scattering across the ground. "Goodbye, Scarlett."
