For a start, fae liked water, which was /very/ suspicious, according to the other cats in town. Not that Seashell minded. Her owner was a kind fisherman who liked bringing her out to the beach. While Seashell played on the ocean's shore, he went fishing on the docks, and brought back fish for them to eat. Bothering to go outside and eat fish was another 'suspicious' thing, apparently, but Seashell decided the other cats were just lazy and had no taste for food. It was a day like no other when faer owner disappeared. Seashell was waiting for him as usual, on the shore of the ocean, but when night fell, he still hadn't returned. As the first rays of sunlight broke through the clouds at dawn, Seashell slunk back to her house, cold and afraid. None of the other cats showed any sympathy, but fae didn't want any, because she knew if any did, it would be fake pity. She spent the next few weeks scrounging for food. She even attempted to fish, but failed miserably and stumbled back to town, dripping wet. She was cold and hungry went she encountered her first stray dog. Seashell had seen dogs before, but they were usually leashed up and quite tame. The barking was annoying, sometimes, but fae knew they were probably just bored. But this dog was different. It was fierce and as hungry as Seashell was, snarling as it stalked closer. She tried to run away, but the dog had backed faer into a corner. She braced herself for the pain. The dog grabbed Seashell in its jaws and shook her and threw her onto the ground. The impact was jarring, but fae was so tired fae could hardly register the pain. It lashed at her face, scoring its claws over her eyes, leaving a seeping, bloody mess. Seashell lay so still, the dog must have thought she was dead, for it stalked away, tail lashing, blood dripping from its jaws. Seashell lost track of time. She lay down for so long, fae wondered if she was dead, too. But then, she could scent the saltwater of the ocean, and the sounds of the waves crashing against the shore, and stood, stumbling blindly towards the place she had always found comfort in. But when she reached the ocean, the waves crashed so loudly it was deafening. A storm was rolling into the sky, and the thunder roared. Seashell cowered in fear, and couldn't move as a wave burst from the ocean and lunged at her, sweeping faer away into its watery depths. Fae thought she was going to drown, when someone saved her. And when fae awoke, she realised she couldn't just swim, she could /breathe underwater/. Seashell was shocked. She was surrounded by others who told her they had saved faer life. But, Seashell was no longer a stray cat. She was a siren, like all the creatures around her. Seashell found they had turned her into a siren to save her, a difficult and sacred spell that hadn't been used in centuries. Faer couldn't express her gratitude. For a long time, she learnt the ways of the sirens. She sang songs and learnt the magic of faer new family. Perhaps, she thought, this was the place fae belonged. The other sirens soon decided to bring her to the surface. Fae sang a song so beautiful that everyone was lured to her melodies, and when she finished, all the sirens congratulated fae. Seashell asked what she had done; she was blind, so she could not see, but could hear the pride in her family's voices. And they told her, 'You lured the fishermen out to sea,' and Seashell found out the hard way what she had truly become. Sirens were monsters, she found out, cursed creatures who would forever practice the way of evil. Seashell was horrified at what she had done, and remembered faer old owner, who had went fishing and disappeared, leaving Seashell to fend for herself. Fae instantly assumed the sirens must have had something to do with it, and fled, hiding in the endless waters of the ocean. The sirens had saved her life, yet were so evil; so cursed. Seashell couldn't bring faeself to return to the people she had once called her family. She spent the rest of her life exploring the ocean, and fae decided the ocean waters, alone, was where she belonged. ---- .⋅ ♡ ⋅. ---- [ Credits ] ᶻᵒᵒᵐ ᶜᵒᵈᵉ: ʳᵉᵐᵃⁱⁿⁱⁿᵍ ᶜᵒᵈᵉ: ᵃʳᵗ: ᶜʰᵃʳᵃᶜᵗᵉʳ & ᵈᵉˢⁱᵍⁿ: ˢᵒⁿᵍ: Sleepsong - Secret Garden ⌨ ˡᵘᵐⁱ ⁱˢ ˢⁱᵍⁿⁱⁿᵍ ᵒᵘᵗ...
