We were both asleep. You on your bed, me on your feet. It was a peaceful night, you had only shifted thrice. All of that was ruined when your alarm clock rang. We both knew what that meant. The dreaded school. You slowly moved your arm to the button on top of the clock and pushed it. The ringing sound stopped. I was relieved to see you roll back over and pull your head cushion over your ears. I took this as an opportunity to snuggle by your face so I stood up and walked over your body, which I know you love because of how you try to push me off. It’s a game! And a fun one at that. I finally reached your shoulders and hopped on the mattress beside you. I nuzzled my head underneath your long, brown hair and cuddled in. Then your dreaded ‘beeping box’ started beeping. You’re always on it nowadays, ever since you got it for your birthday. You reached over for it and picked it up. Your eyes opened and I knew that our snuggle moment was over. You began to read the beep from your beeping box, “Come meet me downstairs, now.” Your eyes lit up with a look I know very well. Fear. I could sense it in the air. That was when you glanced down at me and raised your eyebrow. The fear smell drifted away. “Aw! It’s a little kitty! What’s your name?” Really? You didn’t remember me! I couldn’t believe it. I reached my head down into my fur and pulled the silver plaque that read my name, Pickles. “Pickles? Oh, that’s an adorable name!” I know. People, especially your friends, say that all the time. Your beeping box started beeping again. You read it aloud to me, “I’m waiting. . . .” “Will you come with me, Pickles?” you asked nervously. I rubbed my head on your shoulder to say ‘yes’. You smiled at me and took me in your arms. You slowly walked down the stairs. I could smell your fear scent, it was very strong. Your foot finally hit the floor underneath the stairs. You trembled. “Pickles, promise you’ll stay with me?” you asked nervously. I nuzzled my head in your arm to say ‘yes’. I usually say ‘yes’ to humans. “Hello?” you called into the kitchen. “Hello.” A deep voice growled You jumped backwards. “You’re finally here. I’ve been texting you for hours.” Even though I can see well in the dark, I couldn’t see the source of the voice. It was almost like it was bodiless. “Oh, yes. Years and years of waiting, and I finally can meet you.” The voice said. Finally I could see something. There was a white wispy thing in the air. It took the form of an elderly man. “G-Grandpa?” you called “Yes, you recognize me don’t you. Your parents were afraid that my odd habits would rub off on you if you met me, so they kept me away. But now, I have met you. And I plan to take you with me to my world.” The wisp reached out for your arm, and you screamed. I jumped and bit the wisps leg. This ghost wasn’t transparent, it was actually solid. It yelped and disappeared. “You saved me, Pickles!” You shouted as you scooped me up. Yes, that was the day when you forgot who you were, your grandfather came to visit, and I saved you. Now, if only I could speak and tell this story to more beings.
