Upon some research on the internet, I was amazed to learn that this song, composed by American folk singer Pete Seeger in 1955, has been translated into and sung in at least 30 languages. That a song could be translated into so many languages suggests that despite differences in race, culture and historical experience, peoples in different parts of the world find resonance in the message this song tries to convey, so much so that they like to sing it in their own languages. If this is the case, one wonders why peoples have trouble putting down their differences, distrust and fears toward others and living with each other peacefully. It is puzzling why we humans, who have the intelligence and creativity to make high-tech weaponry capable of causing massive destruction and wiping out the human race and civilization, have trouble seeing the common ground we share and the beauty in our differences. Isn’t that what we see and appreciate in nature? We love roses, but we also love other flowers.
