[ update: woah man, i'm surprised, almost no one on scratch has any idea whats going on, they're just panicking. inform yourself people, there's no need to panic if you're not in ukraine, europe or russia /nm /srs /g ] [ notes: 1. i'm not an actual ukrainian, or a russian. however, i've read a lot about this. i think that you can trust me. if there are any problems, you can always comment. 2. for reading in better format, you can go here: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/585033/?page=1#post-6091908 ] this thing might be a bit long, but if you don't know much about the ukraine-russia crisis other than the fact that its a war and stuff, its worth it. alright. so we all have heard about the war in ukraine, about how its all russia's fault, and about nato and stuff like that. quick question: do we all *actually* know about why this is happening? i think the 13+ here know quite a lot about it, but i'm not sure whether the younger people actually understand it , or whether they're just going with the trend. don't worry if you're a part of that group, ku is here to educate you lmao. - the basics alright now, let's go back to the beginning of everything. before the 1990s, ukraine and russia were a part of this massive country known as the ussr. in 1991, many ukrainian people voted for independence. a short time later, the ussr formally disbanded. because of being one at a time, ukraine and russia share a lot of similarities in their cultures. their language, traditional clothes, etc. are almost the same. those who support russia still exist in ukraine, as ukraine is a young country. there are 3 kinds of groups in ukraine. those who are all about europe, about ukraine, and want ukraine to be a part of nato (north atlantic treaty organization) which is an intergovernmental military alliance. it has 28 european countries and 2 north american countries. the people in this group want ukraine to join nato so that it can completely become a part of europe. the 2nd group has people who support russia. this group is mainly found in the eastern parts of ukraine, near the ukraine-russia border. this region is known as donbas. this group does not like europe or nato. and the 3rd group consists of people who don't care. haha. now that you know the basics, let's move on to the main parts. first of all, - why does ukraine (at least most of it) want to join nato? joining nato means all kinds of nice things for ukraine. the biggest reason why is protection. ukraine and russia have never been on good terms since 8 years. just in case russia ever attacks (which it did), ukraine can depend on nato for support. currently, ukraine is not a part of nato. - why isn't ukraine a part of nato? because if ukraine joins nato, the countries which are a part of nato will HAVE to protect ukraine if anything ever happens to it, because that's the nato deal. but no one wants to waste their military and money on careless decisions, and russia is a scary enemy. plus, most of the countries which are a part of nato get their oil supplies from russia. if russia gets angry and closes their oil supplies, oil prices in europe will rise a LOT, and europe will have to look for other countries which can export oil to them. hence, nato hesitates. - why doesn't russia like ukraine anyway? first of all, putin says that its for a security reason. 5 countries around russia are already a part of nato, and one more can mean that russia can go under attack soon. second, ukraine's borders have BOTH europe and russia on them. ukraine is like in the middle of them. if russia has ukraine, it can easily attack europe and possibly invade a lot of it. this is also why europe is helping ukraine so much. third, a lot of ukraine's ports fall in the black sea. capturing these ports means a lot of trade for russia, and trade means money. also, ukraine is a huge producer of lithium. lithium is quite good for trade. fifth, (told by , thanks dude) ukraine has a lot of oil productions. taking over that will be very beneficial. - why didn't russia attack ukraine earlier? alright, you probably didn't ask this question because i forgot to tell you that russia could've attacked any day in the past 8 years. what pulled the trigger now? i don't know much about this, but my sources say that its because of the usa. usa was threatening russia too much. showing russia in the bad light is quite profitable for usa anyway. fun fact: even ukraine told usa to calm down. - what next? for now, war. russia and ukraine have sit down for a talk, but i personally don't think that war will stop soon (it could, though,, it's probably my pessimism saying that it won't stop). what i'm scared of is that russia can blast / do something else with ukraine's nuclear power plants. if that happens, europe is gonna be in serious danger.
