Authors note: Chapter 8 is split into 2 parts because it messes up the formatting of the whole "Next, Previous, First" thing. But don't worry, there is no wait for part 2! I'm posting it as soon as I paste it into a new project, and put the thumb in! ----------------------------------------------------------------- “Who’s Darktalon? And how were you talking to him?” Fateshifter asked. Azure sighed heavily, “You know when I blacked out, after I was… attacked.” Fateshifter nodded. “He was talking to me. Warning me. He said ‘The dragons around you, are not what they seem. And neither are you.’” “What does that mean?” Robin asked. “Not sure. But anyway, back to Fateshifter’s question; I was speaking to him in my mind. He can talk to me when he wants to, but I can’t reach him, he seems to be a year or two older than us, his dad seems like a sociopathic murderer. Oh, and he’s a Nightwing.” they finished. Silence. It seemed to stretch and grow, and not a sound broke it, except the occasional faint chirp of birds. Fateshifter finally broke the silence. “So is he a good guy or a bad guy?” “The good guy. The bad guy is his dad, and who is after us.” Azure said firmly. Fateshifter wasn’t convinced. “But how can you be sure? I mean his dad /is/ after us, after all.” Azure looked hurt and turned their face away. Fateshifter felt a stab of guilt. “Look, I’m sorry, but… well the rest of us don’t know him as you do, and that just makes it harder for us to trust him.” Azure turned back, their gaze unreadable. “Not that we don’t trust you!” Azure nodded silently. “Well, I suppose we should get going. Right fearless leader?” Viper said, a hint of excitement in his voice. Fateshifter glanced at him and realized that he would be able to find what he had been missing all these years. Dragons who were like him. He felt a sudden pang of worry. What if he wanted to stay? But he pushed that away and nodded. “Right now, if everyone’s ready.” He looked around. Amber nodded. Robin and Azure grabbed everyone's satchels and handed them out. Ocelot smiled at him. “Let's go find our parents.” “And get them home as soon as we can.” Caribou finished in his low voice. They all stepped out of the cave and spread their wings. They started off towards the late afternoon sun. *** “Hey, Fateshifter!” Robin called into the wind. “Yeah? What is it?” He asked her, turning his head to look at her. “I /think/ we’re here. But you might want to see if this is the right village.” They had been in the Sand Kingdom for almost an hour now, with no sign of life. He squinted. “I’m not sure. We’ll have to land.” he signaled to the others with his tail, and they landed, disturbing a cloud of sand. “Ok guys, so I need to make sure this is the right village, so… I’m going in and I’m going to ask some questions. Ocelot, Viper,” He looked at them, “Would you mind coming with me? Ocelot you can disguise yourself as a Sandwing and hopefully, nobody will pay attention to your tail. And Viper, well you’re good.” “Be careful! If I were you, I wouldn’t tell anyone what you’re really doing here. Try to come up with a story if anyone gets suspicious.” Caribou warned. “I have one!” Robin exclaimed, “You could be looking for a gift for your friend Fateshifter, but got lost in the desert and came across these two,” indicating Ocelot and Viper. “And they helped you, and you because friends. You are looking for the Sandwing you saw in your vision because your friend was jealous of whatever another dragon had, but they didn’t know exactly what it was.” “Great idea! But Ocelot, you should say your name is Cactus if anyone asks. It seems like a Sandwingy sort of name.” Fateshifter suggested. Ocelot nodded, “Let's go!”
