I flip to a page near the back and look at the first word I see “Foot” comes out raspy with a hint of computerization in it. So I can only say certain words… I decided to only learn what I can say and ignore the rest of the manual. Suddenly I hear my name along with other names. We stand up and follow the robot saying our names to a large bus. He tells us it's two to a seat, no less, no more. When it's my turn to get on I scan the bus quickly and find a girl with blonde hair that I decide to sit with. She looks up, surprised. “I’m Allison” she holds out her hand. “Ellen,” I informed her, taking her hand. She looks down at the manual and flips the page, finishing it. “I’m a fast reader” she says slowly, clearly thinking back to what she’d read “I already finished reading the whole manual.” I’m surprised but I try to hide it with a friendly smile. At least someone here is friendly. The bus starts moving suddenly and me and Allison bonk our heads on the seat in front of us. If we could laugh, we would’ve but instead we just grinned intensely at each other. “Allow me to study you for a moment” Allison said and I nodded. She stared right into my eyes, like she was searching for something in my hazel eyes. I looked confusedly back into her teal eyes. She continued studying me for a moment longer then she nodded. “You don't know where your” she paused and shook her head before continuing “you enjoy writing, and think I would make good friend material,” I looked back at her surprised, because she had named most of my thoughts so easily. If I had read the whole manual like her I would have asked how she knew all that, but I could only shake my head in amazement. Allison grinned. “Now time for more about me” Allison still had to piece the words together but she was getting faster, “I read, run, write and my… is not in this world.” I scooched over to hug her, as she looked close to tears. I was still rubbing her shoulders when the bus stopped. We got off the bus and saw other buses ahead or behind our bus. Out of each bus came humans marching out, each following a robot in the front. Allison tugged my hand and I realized we had to move. We followed the lines of man’s through the entrance and into a wide area. In the center was a large tent and you could see men training with swords and guns, in the corners sleeping bags were rolled up for them. On the far left side was a three story tall office building, and surrounding it were scattered cabins. On the far right side of the tent a giant one story building sat, looking a bit like the mess hall in Bunked™. ‘Line up!” Someone shouted and we all shuffled to make straighter rows. “When I call your gender and age group, you will go line up near your station.” It took a bit but he finally read “teenage girls, 13-19, office” we shuffled over to the three story building and waited for instructions. A woman walked out of the building and waved for them to follow her inside. She explained that the first floor of this building was the lobby, where they would report to before lessons. The second floor was the office building, and we had to spend all afternoon everyday working there. The third floor was where we would be staying. The third floor had neatly arranged bunk beds on either side of the room with sides that you could pull out and we would store our night clothes and our uniforms. On one side of the hallway was an elevator back down, and there was a bathroom on the other. The bathroom had one wall covered in sinks, and one side covered in separate stalls. The woman explained that our schedules would be on our bed and we had a built-in clock in our chip. If we didn’t go to class on time then our chip would start buzzing and rattling until the next class. I closed to the top bunk and Allison chose the bottom bunk. We found a list including our chores around the camp and our schedule for the day. Allison climbed up so we could combine schedules and see what we would be doing with each other. I had office training in the morning; Allison had it in the afternoon. I had chores in the evening; she had chores in the morning. I had literal work in the afternoon; she had work in the evening. The only things aligned on our schedule were breakfast, lunch, dinner and lights out. It was beginning to get late and we filed downstairs for dinner. We headed into the building on the far
