A careless mistake A fire in a mine The operators weren’t worried They said it was fine It burned 45 minutes Before people were allowed to evacuate But by then For many it was too late Of all the workers 259 lay dead The survivors Scared of what they had fled If you lived in cherry and said You didn’t know anyone who died in that fire You have either been hiding for 100 years Or your a liar A week later 20 men came out of the mine They were alive But definitely not fine This was a horrible disaster Third worst coal mine fire in the USA We still remember that fire To this day,
This poem is based on a fire in a coal mine in Cherry, illinois. It killed 259 men and boys, half of which were 8-16 in age. It is the third largest coal mining disaster in the USA.
