"Maybe . . . we could try again?" His father said. "Surely we can. It's not impossible. Don't worry Turquoise, in no time you'll be like everyone else." "Yes." His mother agreed. "Let's talk to the Ringed Angels, they'll let Turquoise try the Ceremony of Sacrifice again. They have to!" Turquoise noticed his siblings were silent, all of them younger than him. They were scared for him and probably scared for themselves. If their older sibling couldn't shed their rings, then they might not too. "I'll be fine, mother." Turquoise said, irritated. "I could live with these rings, you don't need to go through all that trouble." "But . . . you need to." His mother whispered. The unspoken words hung in the air. He'll never be accepted if he still had those rings. Turquoise looked at them self. He never realized until now just how much he didn't care if he had the rings or not. He could live normally, with or without them. He could make his own decisions. "I could live normally." He said. "The rings don't matter. I can make good decisions." "No you can't." His father said. "Those rings forbid you from doing so." "I can." Turquoise insisted. "I can." "I'll show you." They continued. " I can live by myself. I don't need to be pampered. " "You can't live by yourself!" His father said, appalled. "It's impossible!" "Every other three year old is doing it. Why can't I?" Turquoise shot back. "You haven't performed the Ceremony of Sacrifice correctly! You won't be accepted." His father shouted. Turquoise stared at him. His mother's eyes were wide and his siblings cowered. "Then . . . " Turquoise said at last. " I'll live in the country.
