Sharks are facing an unprecedented risk of extinction after a 71% decline in their population from 1970 to 2018. The plight of sharks has been continuously neglected by callous fisheries and has shown little signs of abating. As the apex predators in marine ecosystems, the absence of sharks would wreak havoc on food chains, resulting in dire consequences. Moreover, it has been clear that the harvesting method of shark finning is exceedingly cruel - the sharks are caught, have their fins cut off, and are then released alive back into the ocean where they would eventually bleed, starve, or suffocate to death with the lack of fins thwarting them from even moving. The unsustainability and atrocity of shark finning are absolutely unethical. Sharks have been slaughtered by a number far beyond what their population could bear.
