About 50 years after a devastating world war, the few survivors of the human race have banded together in small villages in Europe and struggle to stay alive in the ruins. But without people using more land and developing further, nature begins to take over what remains of the big cities. Humans were powerless in this new environment. A group of scientists investigate the situation and learn that in order to keep the human race alive, all people would need to adapt physically. Then, they begin the tests, stealing children from their homes and injecting them with a special serum that would force them to adapt by acquiring animal traits. When Katherine, a girl about thirteen, is captured to be tested on by the desperate scientists, she meets Jacob, a boy who turns her life around. Together, they attempt an escape but fail, learning this change is for the better. But will Katherine, Jacob, and the other test subjects ever truly adapt to the post-war world, and the horrific changes the serum forced upon them?
