Their amnesia leaves them unable to remember anything before that. They were found by a humpback whale pod when they were just a newborn and the whales raised them with the whale calves. Kai cannot remember their real parents and whenever they try to think back, they get a piercing headache which sometimes causes them to black out. Living with the whales, Kai learned how to communicate with them, speaking using echolocation and singing whale songs. Their adoptive mother, the whale who mainly raised them, always told them stories about the constellations and named all the stars in the sky, teaching them how to navigate using the north star. Kai always loved looking at the constellations and finding them. Sometimes, they would swim up to the surface in the nighttime while the whale pod rested and float on the surface, watching the stars. There was a very turbulent storm when the humpback whales and Kai were traveling along the migration route. They dived deeper down to find still waters but Kai and the whales had to come up for air and when they did, they were thrown off course. Kai was separated from their pod and nearly drowned, but he has washed ashore on an island. Now, he spends his days trying to find his whale pod, resting and catching fish to eat each day, and using the stars to guide them at night.

She would always find sick and injured birds, squirrels, mice, and once, even a fish, to bring home and nurse back to health. She also loved to swim in the lake by her house. Her village was on the shore of a very large lake. Most of the houses, including her own, stood half on the water, supported by stilts, other people, including one of her closest friends, lived in boat houses on the water. There was a great storm that lasted nearly a week, which was so fierce, that some houses nearby were destroyed. This led to a huge flood. The whole village was destroyed and Lotus was swept away in the flood. She lost both her sister and her mother as she was carried to a river, downstream. By grabbing a piece of driftwood from the wreckage of a house, she was able to survive and keep her head above the water until the river got shallow enough for her to climb to the shore. She was completely lost, but a fisherman found her and brought her to a nearby village. She has lived there since, with her own hut and a mediation rock garden, and a koi pond filled with fishes that she rescued. She sells flowers for a living and she is known for having the prettiest water lilies. She hopes to one day embark on a journey to find survivors of the flood and maybe find her mother and sister.
