EEK HII so a lot of you wonder how i do shading, here’s a step-by-step tutorial! I hope you like it <3 1.) have at least your lineart and coloring done (they should be on separate layers)- in this drawing i already had the background finished but you dont have to ^w^ 2.) time to add light! get a color like this, a warm, bold color should do the trick. I use this EXACT color every time i do lighting, regardless. 3.) Make a new layer UNDER the lineart, and set the layer filter to ADD or SCREEN. Some programs don’t have add but they usually have screen :D i prefer add so thats what i used 4.) add the light! be mindful of where the light is coming from, have an imaginary sun somewhere on your canvas. My imaginary sun is in the bottom left corner, right above Marty’s paws. Also be mindful of the texture of the thing you’re drawing- see, Marty has fur, so I added fluff into the shading to make it seem as different layers of fur were getting light. I also always add light to the bottom half of the eyes. 5.) adjust the opacity- it depends on how vigorous you want your light to be. The imaginary sun I’m using has a faint glow, so I only put the opacity at 41%. Just make it at an opacity you’re comfortable with! 6.) here’s what it should look like. 7.) time to shade, get this color! the shading color can usually vary from dark periwinkle to magenta. 8.) Put the filter on MULTIPLY. this darkens the layer! also make sure this layer is below the lighting layer. 9.) Add the shading! The shade should be places where the light might not hit. Again, be aware of what texture the thing you’re drawing has. It comes in handy to make depth. 10.) Adjust the opacity! 11.) Here’s what it should look like. 12.) duplicate your color layer. (also make sure it’s on alpha lock) 13.) Get the color you used for lighting again, and get an airbrush you’re most comfortable using. 14.) put the layer on add 15.) …SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS SPONGEBOB SQ- anyways, airbrush the entire layer. 16.) make your ERASER the same brush. 17.) erase the areas the light wont hit. 18.) lower the opacity! 19.) here’s what it should look like. 20.) duplicate the color layer again! 21.) get the same color you used to shade 22.) put the layer on multiply, and airbrush the entire thing. 23.) should look like this! spooky hehe 24.) erase the areas the light WILL hit. 25.) lower the opacity 26.) here’s what it should look like! 27.) this is the order your layers should be in. 28.) duplicate the lineart layer. 29.) put it on alpha lock! 30.) I forgot to screenshot the details in this one, but get the same color you used for lighting and airbrush the lineart on the lighted area. Then get your shade color, and darken it till its almost black but the color you used is still noticeable. Airbrush the areas where the light won’t hit. 31.) lower the opacity! 32.) should look like this :00 very pretty! 33.) Now, get a bright color of your choice. I usually use neon green-ish yellow. 34.) Add a new layer, and put it on top of all the other layers. Make sure the filter is on ADD or SCREEN. 35.) Add eye sparkes! this is personally one of my favorite parts of shading. Go wild, add any types of designs and sparkles. Keep in mind the eye sparkles should be 80% near the bottom of the eye, since that’s where the light touches it most. Keep the layer opacity at 100%. 36.) add signature! 37.) Done! Congratulations, you just learned how to shade my way :D im very proud of you <3
EDIT: OVER 150 VIEWS!?! THATS INSANE?? TYSM I NEVER THOUGHT THIS WOULD GET THAT MANY qwq AAAAA THIS TOOK A LOT LONGER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD TCRFVYGBUHNI anyways i hope this is understandable enough, feel more than okay to ask questions in the chat if you have any, i will happily answer them! Let me know if this helped or not. I’d also love to see your shaded art that you did this tutorial with! TN and Art - me
