( theory by borkthemork on the tumbling website) So, back in Fixing Frobo, there comes a set of lines that had been emphasized back when it had came out. And that scene, would be this: “Souls. Do robots have them?” “It is our belief that anything with memories has a soul.” This episode likes to rally on the idea of souls and the creation of memories, and dictates heavily that in Amphibia’s universe, anything that harbors a set of recollection could be seen as sentient and alive. We even have this philosophy be used to showcase the return of Frobo’s memories and agency from basically what we call a “full reboot”, and one of the ways used to recall Frobo’s memories was through heartfelt words and apologies. (“Please, it’s me! Polly! You’ve got to remember.” etc) It didn’t seem very important at first viewing, however, the more we ponder over Fixing Frobo and its story structure, it becomes pretty clear that there does seem to be a probable parallel being built up for a later confrontation. After all, this is a story about robots, the return of old friends, and the wanting to regain connection after what seemed like a long time of “Are you okay?” and “Can I get you back”. And from what we’re seeing, we have Marcy’s conscience not really terminated but just locked up under what they call a “full system reboot” similar to what has occurred to Frobo. (“Redundant memories, that sort of thing.” “This requires a full system reboot.” -Darcy) We could also add the assumption of a destroyed/captured friend, the fact the Core is very much a binary/living entity, and the wanting for the girls to be reunited, you get a pretty understandable picture that these different arcs have potential similarities between them. (“This is her body, but we’ve got her locked up in a little room up here.”) And with that implication in mind — and the idea of Marcy’s memories being rebooted for full control — we then get a theory that goes like this: If anything that harbors memory is defined as something with a soul (as something living and able to be returned), and Marcy is described to be hidden and marked away where she wouldn’t be able to gain agency, then the solution to getting Marcy back is simple. If Marcy still has memories, then she is still alive. All she needs is someone to remind her of who she once was.
