Get in the car now,” my mother said in a tone that did not allow any argument. “But it’s safer here, it is.” I persisted as I stumbled blindly through the dark after her. The deep snow clawed at my ankles. She turned sharply on her heel. “They are coming for us,” she seized my shoulder, “ and they will hunt us down, they-” Her grip on my shoulder suddenly tightened. “Do you hear that?” “Yes.” was all I could whisper. From the distance I could hear the tell tale rhythmic thud, which meant they were coming. The general consensus was that if you could hear them it was too late for you. They can’t see, but they can hear you breathing and can smell your fear. Once they’ve found you they’ll never stop hunting you. The more you fear them, the easier you are to find. My mother and I froze. I closed my eyes and held my breath. I tried to imagine being somewhere else, anything that could hide the fear. Minutes passed. One had crept up next to me, I could hear it sniffing the air. Hide the fear. Hide the fear. To late. They new. I couldn’t hide it. “Run!” my mother screamed. We stumbled towards the car. Something tore at my side burning my skin. Panic taking over. It grabbed my hair, I screamed and plummeted into the snow. I felt my mother roughly seize my arm. I was hauled into the car. She fumbled with the ignition, begging the car to start. Silence. The face of one appeared, on the other side of my window-it’s eyes hungry. My blood-curdling screams where drowned out by the sound of our car accelerating through the woods and into the darkness.
