Chapter 3: When I woke up the next morning, Nightpaw was already up. He was clawing his bedding in excitement. Mouse-brain, I thought. He'll have to get more bedding. Well, that's his problem, not mine. I got up and stretched. "Do you plan on sleeping on the bare ground?" I asked him, sarcastically. "Oh! You're up! And no," He replied. "Alright then, let's go find our mentors," I said. We walked out of the den and went searching. I found Streampelt in a matter of seconds. She was as excited as I was, so of course she was waiting right next to the warrior den. Nightpaw found his mentor, Webclaw, a moment later. He was eating a mouse by the fresh-kill pile. He looked up as Nightpaw and me approached him. "Ah. You're ready. Where's your sister's mentor?" He asked as we came over. "Over there," Nightpaw said, flicking his tail at our mother. As we all went past, my father Silverclaw looked up. "Good luck on your first day of training! Don't hassle your mentors!" He called to us. "We won't!" Nightpaw called back just as I said "We will!" Nightpaw glared at me. I stuck my tongue out at him, and we chased each other to the camp entrance. When we got to the forest, my mother and Webclaw stopped. "Today, we'll practice hunting," Streampelt said. I had seen my mother in the hunter's crouch when I had snuck away from the nursery as a kit, so I knew what she was about to do. By the way, sneaking out resulted in a full day in the nursery, so don't sneak out of there. Trust me, you don't want to. I dropped into the hunter's crouch, and Nightpaw copied me when I flicked him with my tail. "I was about to teach you how to go into the hunter's crouch, but clearly you already know how," Streampelt said. She left it unsaid how I knew how, and I silently thanked her. "Alright, let's begin," Webclaw said. By the end of the training session, we had caught 3 mice, 1 sparrow (I caught that!), and 5 voles. It was so much, we needed our mentors to help us carry it back. "Seems like you guys had a good first hunt!" Our father exclaimed when he saw our success. "We did!" Nightpaw and I replied in unison. "Hey!" An unfamiliar voice called. "I'm Flamepaw! You guys must be the new apprentices!" We looked at Flamepaw. "Hello, I'm Shadowpaw," I meowed to him. Nightpaw glared at me. I sighed. "And this is my annoying brother, Nightpaw," I added. "Nice to meet you guys!" He replied. "Um... Can you guys be my friends?" He asked, awkwardly. "Uhhh... Sure!" I replied, equally as awkward. "It's fine with me," Nightpaw said. "Cool!" Flamepaw purred. And then we went to hang out. Chapter 4: A few days had passed, and I was still amazing at hunting. "Alright, are you three ready?" Dunecoat, Flamepaw's mentor asked us. "We are!" We replied in unison. Dunecoat smiled. "Then let's go," he said. We headed out into the forest, all of us excited to hunt. "I'm going to catch a dove!" Flamepaw said. "Well, I'm going to catch a pheasant!" I replied. He hissed playfully and smacked my tail. I retaliated by batting at his ear. "Hey! Don't forget why we're here!" Nightpaw scolded. "I hate to agree, but we really should hunt," Flamepaw said. "Imagine Grayspots if we came back without prey." I nodded. Grayspots was an elder, and all apprentices know it's not a good idea to come back with nothing to eat when there's an elder around. Suddenly, I heard a noise in the bushes. I pricked my ears, smelling the scent of squirrel. I flicked my tail at my brother and my friend in an "I got this one" way. They nodded and stepped back. I dropped into the hunter's crouch, pinpointing my prey. Suddenly and swiftly, I pounced. When I turned back to Flamepaw and Nightpaw, I had a fat squirrel in my jaws. "Nice catch!" Flamepaw exclaimed. "Thanks," I tried to say, but my mouth was full of squirrel, so it sounded something like "Thmx." A few minutes later, Flamepaw caught a dove. "See? I told you!" He said to me. Sadly, I couldn't find a pheasant. "All right, you win, I can't find a pheasant anywhere," I said to him after several minutes of searching. "Hmm, that's too bad," he said, smugly. I hissed. A few minutes later, all of us had caught a good amount of fresh-kill and were heading back to camp. When we got there and deposited our fresh-kill on the fresh-kill pile, it was almost dark out. "Well, goodnight, guys," I said to Nightpaw and Flamepaw. "Goodnight!" They replied at the same time. After we all said goodnight to our mentors, we headed to the apprentice den. Flamepaw was asleep before he touched the moss, and Nightpaw curled up and almost instantly fell asleep. I snuggled into my moss, feeling pleased with myself, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
