currently, the only way to make items is to use your research. because you can't make any items, you have no research. however, in order to allow you to see the concept of this game, all you have to do is press the J key. this will fill your research book with all of the items you can make in the game. to use your research click the book icon. Press J to fill your research book click the book icon the use your research
