tone is the different ways of saying a sentence. for example, if someone called your name, they could say it in a serious and firm tone if they were angry/a cheerful and joking tone if they were happy. however, we can only identify what tone people speak in my person-to-person. so, on the internet, we should use tone tags to indicate the tone. why do we use them? some people can find it hard to pick up tones when communicating. this is even more difficult online as there is a lack of voice and body language. they can be used at the end of a text message, appearing as a slash with a letter(s) to its right. an example is like /j (joking) or /srs (serious). please do not mock or joke about tone tags. you maybe dont need them but there are others who do. in fact, a lot of people have come across a sentence online/in person where you dont know if its sarcastic or serious. tone tags shouldnt be used to be mean. dont write something rude with /j (joking) next to it. you dont really need to learn eVery single tone tag, just the ones that will help the most. i will put some of them here, but feel free to google any others! (note, i got these from a carrd!) /j = joking /hj = half joking /s or /sarc = sarcastic or sarcasm /nsrs = not serious /lh = light hearted /g or /gen = genuine or genuine question /ij = inside joke /ref = reference /t = teasing /nm = not mad /lu = a little upset /nf = not forced /nay = not at you /ay = at you /nbr = not being rude /ot = off topic /th = threat /cb = clickbait /f = fake /q = quote /l or /ly = lyrics /c = copy pasta (where messages are constantly copied over the internet) /m = metaphorically (the comparison of two things, eg. her heart is gold') /li = literally /rt or /rh = rhetorical question (a question that is not expected to be answered) /ex = exaggeration /p = platonic or not in a romantic way /r = romantic /a = alterous or neither romantic/platonic /sx or /x = s3xu4l intent /nsx or /ns = non-s3xu4l intent /pc or /pos = positive comment /nc or /neg = negative comment /neu = neutral comment these are just a few that i thought were pretty important! i hope this educated you:)
