Briar fidgeted with her sleeve. She had practiced speaking with her brother Nectar, along with pretty much everything else, but oh boy, she was nervous. The time passed quickly and finally, her name was called. “Briar Larsen.” She stepped into the center of the stage and was surprised to see it was full of balls. /A ball pit. Great, I might drown in those./ She grinned at the thought- it was ridiculous, even to her. Then a ball burst open. She gave a surprised yelp and saw her clothes smoking. /Good thing I’m a coal. This looks natural on my clothes, heh. Otherwise, I might have ruined my dress or something./ She looked down and saw a question. ‘What was your favorite thing to do at home?’ A typical question, but she noticed the past tense right away. She looked down, trying to control the emotions rising inside her, and replied, “Well, I like climbing trees. As you can see, or can’t as I’m almost buried underneath, I’m small, but it makes climbing easier. I can also jump from tree to tree, I mastered it with my brother.” Her voice caught, and she quickly scrambled for another ball, hoping for a light question. ‘Who will you miss the most?’ No such luck, but at least she could answer this question easily. “I would miss Nectar the most. He’s my brother. I love him really, and I promised I would see him again.” Her own words rang in her ears. It sounded so confident that she herself almost believed it. Almost. She stood straight, glaring defiantly at the audience, daring them to object. Instead, she heard murmurs of approvement, and she relaxed, diving in for another ball. ‘How do you like the bath?’ She blinked, wondering if she saw it correctly. Yup, it said bath. “Yeah, I like it. You push some buttons and poof! You’re clean. So comfortable and warm.” She didn't mention the fact she was scared of the water, opening up her weaknesses didn't sound like a good idea to her. “So... I guess that’s it.” She shifted to take a bow or something, and the ball beneath her burst open. “Ooh, a special one!” She said, working on the fake excited voice. Inside, she hoped that this was the question she could answer. ‘What do you want to say to those watching now?’ “I want to say that while I may not look much, coming from district twelve and everything, you shouldn't underestimate my will to survive. Thank you.” /Oof that seemed cold. But if it helps with my reputation... As long as it doesn't make me weak... Oh well./ She bowed and went back to her seat, grinning in satisfaction.
