Clover lived by the beach, in a very traditional society. Everyone acted the same, walked the same, talked the same, etc.. But right above their heads, was a land where everyone could be who they wanted to be. Clover envied that place. In the sky, was a floating island of clouds. On those clouds lived what where called the Avis cats (or according to clovers grandma “dumb bird cats”), and they could fly. They were also immortal. One day, Clover grew tired of the oppressive nature of his community, and wanted to meet the Avis cats. He followed the beach up to a meadow, where a single tree stood. Clover clambered up the tall oak, slowly, taking care not to fall. When he reached a height at the edge of his comfort zone, he stopped, and waited on a branch. He called out, but no answer came. He was about to leave when suddenly, THUMP. It was an Avis cat! The cats pelt glowed with stars, and their wings had a blue glow to them. Clover thought how silly he must look, because he didn’t have stars in his fur, only twigs and leaves. “HI!” shouted the cat. Clover jumped. “THE NAMES ALEX! WHATS YOURS?” “C-clover” he stuttered. “ and you don’t have to shout, I’m right here.” Alex tilted his head. “Oh. Ma told me that all of you land cats hearing gets washed out by the loud waves.” Clover could barely keep himself from laughing. “What else does she say about us?” Alex looked at the ground, blushing. “Well, she said that if we didn’t behave then you would throw us in the ocean- BUT obviously I don’t believe that now!” The two cats talked for awhile, and promised that they would meet up again. Over the weeks, Clover had grown very fond of Alex, but his strict father had grown more and more s u s of Clovers repeated outings. One cool autumn evening, the pair went on a walk together. When they reached the lone tree, Alex took a deep breath and said, “Clover, you’ve always been there for me, through the highs- and the lows. From that awkward first day when I crashed into the tree, to this second, right now, I knew you were the one for me. I love you Clover.” Clovers eyes stretched wide, then he broke into a purr and rubbed up against Alex. “I love you too” Suddenly there was a deep voice. “You both like each other we get it.But I’m afraid that won’t happen because I’ve already arranged you a marriage with a pretty she-cat.” Clover was frightened. How did he track them? “Father I-“ He was going to say he loved toms, but was interrupted by his father yelling, “ Say sir when you speak to me! I want nothing to do with a son who is sneaking off with some insane bird-cat-angel whatever!” And with that, he sprung at Clover, slicing his throat. “NO!” Screeched Alex. Clovers father walked away, saying, “He is a disgrace to my family.” The world was turning black around Clover. He could feel his bl0od in his throat, nearly choking him. Alex was suddenly calm. “I’m going to transfer my spirit. I will d!e, but you will obtain my immortality and flight.” “No! I was going to d!e first anyways!” “It’s alright. You have made my life worth living.” Clover sighed. “But what if I give up” “You know what I would say? I’d say that’s the one thing that I’ll never let you do.” With that, Alex pressed up against clover for the last time, and in an instant, he was gone. The physical pain was gone, but an even bigger wound had opened in his heart. Clover shrieked into the fading sunset. One year later Clover lives in the meadow with his adopted daughter Alexa. Every day they bring flowers to Alex’s grave, and every night clover sings a song to Alexa. He was never much of a singer, but he tried. “Just say you’ll always be there, and so will I.” The End
