The Story -------------------- ~ C h a p t e r o n e~ Ember always wondered about the past and myths. Myths that Her parents used to tell her. The way that they told their stories made Ember feel like she was really living through the whole experience. Jackson on the other hand thought that the stories were rubbish and although they were fun to listen to, He always felt deep down that they weren’t real. For twins, Jackson and Ember are actually quite the opposite. The only reason that they were really connected was because of the love for their parents. But remember the islands of winter are a horrible, dreadful place. When Ember and Jackson were about 9 their parents went out during a raging blizzard to help some of the less fortunate families near the other side of the woods. The storm ended a few days later and People in the higher ranks came and went checking in on the other townsfolk, Delivering food and other necessities to those in need. The twins sat and watched, Waiting for their parents to come, but they never returned. 5 years have passed since Ember and Jackson have been living on their own. “Hey uh Em” Said Jackson in a voice so quiet it was barely a whisper “You know what today is right”. Ember turned around with a puzzled expression on her face “No, What… Oh” She suddenly realized what today was. “How can it be our birthdays already?”. Jackson shrugged “When all you’ve got is your annoying sibling and an old cabin at the edge of the woods time can get lost”. Ember just said “Well, we don’t need to celebrate this year. Or any year ever again at that” There was an awkward silence then she said “You know Jackson, It will never be the same again right?” Jackson sighed “Yeah, I know”. “Though I do have one surprise for you.” Jackson Went into their room then came back out with a tattered piece of paper in his hand. It had a deep ruby red ribbon tied across it into a bow. He placed the paper into Ember's hands and said “Open it”. There is no way to describe the look of excitement and shock on Ember's face. “Th-thank you” She hesitated quietly through her tears. “I am assuming those are tears of joy” Said Jackson. “Yes! Yes they are” As she ran over to hug him. The unrolled piece of Paper was a map, But not just any map. It was a map of the islands. The islands of the seasons. “Where did you get this?” Exclaimed Ember, Shocked. “When you sent me into town to look for meat for the stew, I saw a trader of old and collectable items” Said Jackson, his voice nearing to a whisper “But I had to use fathers stopwatch…” Ember stared off into the darkness “You know, that was the last thing father ever gave us. Jackson, You didn’t have to do that for me” She muttered. “ It’s too late to return it now. That trader could be on a whole new island!” He joked but Ember thought “Maybe so”. Jackson and Ember looked down at the map in awe. Well, Ember did. Jackson looked like he was trying to figure out an unsolvable puzzle. “What do those triangle symbols mean?” Jackson asked Ember. Ember looked down at the Paper puzzled “I think that those represent trees? Oh! And all the different colored lines represent the continent before the war!” Ember exclaimed as she pointed to an odd blob in the corner of the page. Jackson nodded “uh-huh” but he seemed distracted, staring off into the shadow of the trees.
