Membraprimitividae, or primitive fin is a family of early fish. They are herbivorous, eating kelp that grows in the shallow waters. To drag themselves across the sea floor, they have developed muscular fins. They cannot go onto land. They live in small colonies, placing their eggs in the safest places possible in Spring. The eggs hatch months later. After hatching, the juveniles are on their own. They start off eating small algae, but as they grow they move on to kelp. The plants that they feed on are toxic, so they have a specialized digestive system.
