hello, if you’re here, you’re probably wondering what this is all about, well it has to do with how asian (or should I say east asian) culture has blown up recently. as someone who grew up getting called a “dog eater” and the g sIur, I was happy to see that I was finally getting representation in a media so full of blue eyed blondies who looked and spoke nothing like me, but none of it lasted for very long. People started seeing east asians as these toys that they wanted to play with, have, and be. Soon enough, everyone started trying to look and be like their “precious kpop idols”, their “beautiful waifus”, and even their “future c-drama girlfriend”. It seemed like all the entire world wanted was to be asian. all of a sudden, random people online would start calling you “unnie” or “oppa” despite the fact that you didn’t even know them. around every sharp turn people were calling every japanese woman they saw a “waifu” and every japanese man they saw a “husbando”. To me, it felt like the world went insane, how could the same people who wanted me to “go back to korea” now want to visit it so bad. All of a sudden, it was almost as if east asian cultures had lost all meaning. They became aesthetics, tools, objects for people to play around with, us east asians turned into a random white person’s fantasy dream. It all made me so uncomfortable to the point where I ended up wishing I was never korean at all. but, if you’ve ever thought that like I did, your culture has deep meaning, your culture is beautiful, your country and nationality is not an aesthetic to simply be romanticized, it’s part of your history, part of culture and don’t you ever forget that. Remember that you’re more than the disgusting labels people keep putting on you. I am not your “unnie”, I am a real human being.
