She was found by them, and then brought and given shelter, and is now a part of their little group. Aria gets most of her knowledge from books or being taught by Zay, so her narration in places can seem quite formal. She isn't allowed to go outside, at all. She spends most of her time indoors. She can't because everyone fears that she doesn't know enough about the real world to actually go there.
