The Story -------------------- Chapter Two The next morning Ember awoke to the smell of fried carrots. They were easy to afford and Jackson knew how to make them crispy like the crunching of dried leaves on the outside yet soft like butter on the inside. “Morning sis. Sleep well?” Jackson asked as he shoved a carrot on her plate. Ember raised her eyebrows in surprise “What put you in such a good mood” then she Smirked. Jackson looked surprised that Ember would ask then calmly said “Oh, I don’t know” he said as his mood darkened, but seemed distracted as he nibbled on his breakfast. Ember sighed and looked out the window. It looked as if a storm had started brewing. “Hey Jackson, I’m going to head to the market before the storm comes. Need anything?” She asked. “Nah… actually now that I think of it, could you get some fresh bread and goat milk?” Ember looked a bit shocked but reluctantly agreed. As Ember walked through the wind she was thinking. “Goat’s milk and bread?” She thought “He hates those things, we only have them when we go on long journeys. Jackson wouldn’t ask for those unless..” She quickly shook that thought out of her head headed into the market “Ah greetings young Viotto! How is your brother doing? ”exclaimed one of the old ladies running the bread stall. “Fine Mrs. Abednego” She quickly spurted out and walked away. Ember wasn’t a huge fan of talking to the stall workers, or anyone for that matter. She quickly hurried to the stall of fruits and vegetables. The line was long since plants are scarce and only the most talented of farmers could grow them. Anyways, It was finally Embers turn so she bought a handful of potatoes, carrots, and some beets. She looked over and something caught her eye. It looked like a locket with incredibly detailed engravings along it. As Ember leaned over to take a closer look, She noticed that it had an image from the ancient language representing each of the fabled islands. A snowflake for winter, A cherry blossom for spring, Summer had a glistening sun, and Autumn had a Maple leaf. Ember picked up the locket, lifted up her head and shrieked. There was an old man with a dark blue cloak and a kind but gravelly voice “ Take it my dear” He whispered “I think it’s had another adventure with on of you” Ember wasn’t sure what he meant by that but gratefully said thank you and threw a coin into his jar anyways. When Ember walked into their cabin, Jackson was sitting on the bench looking through Mom and Dad's old books. They were cartographers and spent days doodling in their journals. “Hey Jacks? You good, It’s just that you’ve been pretty… Not like yourself these past few days” She said as she walked over to Jackson. He looked up a bit shocked then said “yeah I’m fine but-” He glanced over at the locket in Ember's hand “Where’d you get that?” He asked, looking amazing and confused all at the same time. “Oh, from an old man’s stall. It has incredible details doesn’t it? '' She smiled and looked down at the light oak and birch locket in her hands.
