Foes you defeat can drop many things, like scrap material, car parts, money, or even special rounds for your guns. Be on the lookout for crates, as you can get good items from them, and you can complete quests from various survivors for rewards. Return to your launch strip garage and press SPACE to edit your car. Use your arrow keys to switch options, and press SPACE again to leave.
I tried to use double WASD-style controls so that you can use either thumb for aiming comfortably. In the garage, you can upgrade your car using skill points, change ammunition type and weapon type.
