CHAPTER TWO ———————— The sun approached its throne in the middle of the clouded sky. CloudClan was busy, and Snowfoot was yelling at everybody. Her force echoed around the cave, alerting every cat of Stareye’s appearance. “Stand back! Frostheart, stop trying to save the day and get back!” Snowfoot stepped towards Stareye. She stood over her, snarling at the warriors and curious younger ones surrounding the strange she. “Go back to what you were doing. /I/ will take care of Stareye—that’s your name, right, darling?—and I don’t need any interruptions.” Everyone, seeing the fed-up look on Snowfoot’s face, scrambled away. Only two apprentices and Frostheart stood around, wanting to watch the process. “We’ll be quiet,” Frostheart promised when Snowfoot confronted her and the apprentices. “I suppose I could use your help,” Snowfoot reluctantly admitted after many useless tries to get Stareye to talk. Frostheart crouched closer, poking her gently with a paw. Stareye’s eyes shot open. The she-cat obviously was trying to sit up, but there was no avail. “Stareye.” the she-cat muttered. Some more cats gingerly gathered around. They wanted to figure out who this queer cat was. “We know you are Stareye!” Snowfoot exclaimed impatiently. “But /where/ do you come from?” The question made suspense form in the air while Stareye struggled to shape words. It became bigger and bigger, until a cat watching repeated the question louder. Despite Snowfoot’s harmful glare, the cat asked again. “Land,” Stareye sputtered out. Her word was wonky and almost incomprehensible. “Land. Come from land below, I do. Below the mountains. Not from here, I am not.” She didn’t say everything correctly. “Mountains” became “mou’tains” and some of her words slurred. “Way down below. In grassy meadow. Warmer there, it is. Prey there. Tried to survive here. Tried to hunt. No. No success. No prey, there isn’t. No prey! No grass! No warm! Nothing!” Stareye’s last words became frightened and loud, attracting Badgerleap and other cats over. “Have you found Cloudstar yet?” Frostheart questioned Badgerleap. Stareye yelled some more words out. “No,” Badgerleap shook his head. “It’s worrying me. She would’ve come over here by now. You don’t think she’s fainted or trapped in the snow, is she?” Cloudstar attempted to wrestle away from her captors. “Let me go!” she urged. “You can’t do this, Hawkjaw!” The calico tom smiled. “You’ve always been quite so easy to anger, dear. Keep your grip strong, Nightberry.” The tom glanced over to the other she-cat holding Cloudstar and frowned. “Darlingdove. Be like Nightberry, won’t you?” The pained and hurt expression from the molly pleased the tom. It was exactly what he was expecting. “Where even /are/ we?” Cloudstar demanded. Hawkjaw raised his tail and walked by the group of mollys, brushing his tail over the mouth of Cloudstar. “Hush, my dear,” he murmured, moving on, “The more you struggle, the more it hurts.”
