Wisdom gazed out the den where she could barely make out the faint glint of the stars sparkling so high above her. Beside her, she felt Myko shift. “What’s keeping you up?” The male whispered. “I-I didn’t wake you, did I?” The brown she-wolf laughed kindly. “Of course not. I just.. Have some of my own demons to face, too.” “Tokula? But.. Isn’t she good now?” Wisdom nodded slowly, pulling her rosy gaze away from the diamond-filled sky to look at her paws. “I wasn’t talking about her.” Feeling Myko still beside her, she swallowed, searching for the words to continue and knowing there would be no right answer. “I scare myself.” She finally breathed. “Whenever my demons come out, I can do so much, I’m so strong and powerful, and damaging.” “But, Tokula was doing that, Wisdom.” Myko’s words should have been comforting, but they rolled off her pelt like rain. “That wasn’t you.” “Wasn’t it?” She hissed, digging her claws into the ground as she felt tears building in her eyes. “Why didn’t I try harder to stop her? Why didn’t I separate myself from the pack to not hurt anyone? Why-” She stopped herself just in time, the last secret weighing heavy on her heart. Feeling something lay over her paw, she looked up to see Myko staring at her in concern. “Why did I almost love it?” She breathed, before pulling her paw away. “It’s not that I loved hurting people—I really don’t, it’s just.. I loved feeling powerful.” She tilted her head back up to look at the sky. “I loved feeling like I meant something. Like I was important.” “You *are* important, Wisdom. You know that, don’t you?” “I don’t feel it.” Wisdom cringed as a long silence forced its way into the conversation, knowing that Myko was trying to come up with something to say to comfort her. As much as she appreciated the effort, she didn’t think he’d ever succeed. And, he didn’t get the chance to before Wisdom saw two familiar she-wolves walk into camp.
