The great Bardur/Vengir lines held against the germanic onslaught, as reinforcements were delayed. Each trooper fought with vigor. Each man making their enemy pay for every inch of ground. Each man killing 3 dozen before falling. It was a glorious stand and those who came back were heroes. But the enemy kept getting more troops and eventually the force had to retreat due to lack of supplies and ammo. Not because of casualties.
