Kindra held her breath, as the color seeped from her vision. It was happening again. When she slipped away, away from her form in the physical world and falling into her tiny glass body. It had been this way ever since Kindra’s older sister Delanie had died in a car accident. Delanie had been Kindra’s second mother, always there to help her along when she needed it most. Kindra’s real mom had left her family three years ago. Kindra remembered that day clearly her mother kissing Kindra on the head, tears in her eyes “I’ll miss you” she whispered. Kindra had been confused at the time but she understood when her mother had driven away and never come back. Shortly before Delanie’s death Kindra had gotten sick, and even the doctors didn’t know what was wrong with her. Often after a big medical test she would lay in her hospital bed and stare out into space letting her mind wander to the farthest reaches of her head. Then there was the day, the first day that she slipped into the body of the little glass bird and crossed into the world of the Forgotten. Kindra closed her eyes as the last of herself slipped through the crack in between worlds. When she opened her eyes again she saw the endless purple and blue sunset, faint stars visible through the clouds. Her tiny feet rested on the soft navy blue grass. Kindra lifted her translucent wings and gently took flight into the air, slowly rising into the stunning ether. A boy floated past Kindra. The boy’s skin was glassy as if a foggy film was covering his whole body like a ghost. As he passed the boy nodded at Kindra, a faint smile on his lips. Kindra flew higher until she reached a fluffy white cloud where an old woman sat. “Hello Miss Fay” Kindra chirped. The old woman looked up and reached out a shaking finger towards her to land on “hello dear” she said “I wrote a letter to your granddaughter like you asked” Kindra said as she perch atop Fay’s finger. “Thank you” She replied gratefully “Can you be set free now?” Kindra asked hesitantly. Fay took a deep breath in. “Now that she knows the truth, yes, my soul can finally be… free” Kindra smiled and flitted onto the cloud beside Fay, this was the fifth lost soul she had helped using her connection with the physical world. The world of the Forgotten was a place where all lost souls gathered until they could be set free. Fay stared deep into Kindra’s eyes for a while then finally she spoke “I really do hope that your soul is set free just like the others you have helped…” “but… I’m not lost” Fay let out a long and tired sigh. " You may not see yourself as lost but…" she paused. "How can you come here when others can't?" Fay's question hung in the air. It was something Kindra had wondered about for a while but never thought too hard about. "I don't know". The silence grew thicker with each passing moment, finally when Kindra looked back over at Fay she was almost as clear as glass. "Please don't leave yet" Kindra said. Out of all the lost souls she had helped, Fay was the one who touched her heart the most and it broke her to see yet another person she cared for disappearing into the wind. Fay just stared down at Kindra, her eyes glassy with tears. " let you find peace wherever that may be" was all she said in response as she vanished into the air and a breeze brushed across the cloud blowing away the last of the mist where Fay had been. Just then Kindra heard a faint click… she stared down in horror as she realized there was a crack in her translucent wing. Then she heard it again click click click more cracked appeared on her little glass body. What's happening? Kindra thought as even more cracks fractured her body then she felt the familiar feeling of being sucked back into the living world but this time was different. All the times her soul flew back to her body in the physical world the glass bird she was inhabiting had never broken. The color dimmed as she closed her eyes and Kindra could feel herself slipping in between worlds. Then she opened them again, expecting to be in her body, staring up at the ceiling of the hospital. But instead Kindra was staring at herself. It looked like she was sleeping with a serene look on her face. Slowly Kindra turned to the machine monitoring her heart rate. A flat line was all she saw. And that's when she heard a sound she had been tuning out, a loud bee. The sound of a heart stopped beating. Kindra choked on a scream as she stared down at her human hands a foggy colorless film covering them. She was dead. Her eyes clouded with tears as arms wrapped around her. Kindra looked up into a face she recognized. "Delanie?" Kindra asked hopefully. Delanie didn't say anything, only smiled sadly and wrapped Kindra into a warm embrace. She finally whispered into Kindra's ear as the hospital room began to fade to white light. "You're finally here" she stared deeply into her little sisters face "I was waiting for you"
