Outback Games Here I am right now, facing the huge iron statue of Ned Kelly’s iconic helmet in the middle of the desert whilst standing on a circular disk of steel about three metres wide. To the sides of me there are twenty other teenagers wearing the same clothing. A khaki t-shirt, pale grey cargo pants, an Akubra hat, and a black hoodless motorbike jacket. Before we begin, I’ll fill you in with what I am doing. It is the year 2086 and Australia has a hugely different government than 60 years ago. Our president, a posh English ruler named Forbes Digby whose father, Lucifer Digby, completely overthrew the Australian government in 2033. To remember our defeat, every year 21 teenagers from all the states and territories except the Capital, get put into a huge outback themed arena to fight to the death. This event is called the Outback Games. My name is Emily Solace, I am fifteen and I am from the Pilbara in Western Australia. “Ladies and Gents!” booms a speaker hidden from view. “Let the 51st Outback Games begin!”. I do a quick stretch while humming the twenties song ABCDEFU and tie my long brown hair up in a ponytail, before putting my body into a running position, ready for the chorus of ‘Beds are Burning’ by Midnight Oil. Suddenly I remember what my trainer, John said, “Run away from the helmet!” While I am waiting, I notice some unusual things. Some people are meditating, others are hopping up and down on the spot. I even see a younger girl do a handstand. “How can we dance when our earth is turning!” Suddenly the only thing you can hear is the music. Even the birds are silent. “How do we sleep while our beds are burning!” As soon as the chorus ends, I sprint for my life, away from the iron helmet.
