I sprint as hard as I can away from the helmet, my legs pumping. I look back and I see it! Blood and death! I see a spear go through a boy holding a boomerang and he falls to the ground, screaming in pain. People are face down, lying on the ground and others are frantically running around to get the supplies piled up around the helmet. I look up and I see a bright orange backpack sitting on the hard red dirt. I quickly scramble up from the ground and grab the backpack by the top handle and sling it over my shoulder, before jogging towards a large spherical boulder, about seven hundred metres away. All I can hear is shouting, screaming and the sound of my breathing as I run away into the desert. Suddenly, I hear a whoosh as something rushes past my face. I turn my head around to see a girl with short red hair holding a hunting knife in one hand and an ornately decorated steel boomerang in the other. I increase my pace to a sprint as I want to get to the safety of the rock. She flings the boomerang at me, and I duck just as it zooms over my head, and it disappears into a bush. I keep running, with the girl hot on my heels and then there is a whistle. I slowly turn around to find the girl is lying face down on the ground with a long spear sticking out of her back. I breathe a sigh of relief and then I cautiously jog over to her body, watching out for a hidden assailant. I bend down to prise the knife out of her hand, and I securely place into my pocket for future use. I slowly jog over to the car-sized rock which is now much closer, and I notice a small hole in it which I suspect to be a hidden camera. I wave at the hole and then I get down on my knees in the shade of the rock to examine the contents of the orange pack. I unzip the top to find a sleeping bag, a coil of black rope, flint and steel, a 250-gram pack of beef jerky, a slingshot with some rocks, a dozen water purification tablets and, luckily, a metal water bottle. I open the bottle to check for water, and I find it half full. I sit down and I take a big mouthful of the cool water. I hadn’t felt thirsty before, but when I was reminded of it, I couldn’t help but feel dehydrated. I carefully slide my knife and sling into my belt. Then I zip up my bag and lean it against the rock. My highest priority is to find water, and my second is to get more weapons and tools. But first I need an unobstructed view of the arena before it gets dark. I walk around the rock to look for a foothold and I notice a few closer to the top. I place my hand on a piece of rock that is sticking out and I push up, propelling myself up onto the top of the sphere. I stand up and stare straight at the iron helmet in the distance.
