Near Ned Kelly’s helmet about a kilometre away, I see a group of human figures standing around a big pile of food, weapons and other supplies. On top of the pile, I become aware of a large metal box that looks like it might contain something that would help me win these games. I need that, I think as I turn around to see the sun is beginning to set. In the distance I see an area of land that is much darker than the surrounding desert. I nearly fall off the rock in joy as I realise it’s probably a rainforest with tons of water in it. I sit down to watch the beautiful pastel coloured sunset and to decide my plan of action for the next few days. I decide that I will trek through the arid desert to the rainforest a few hours before sunrise to get water, before coming back a few days later to hopefully steal whatever’s inside the case and bring it back here. I think about trying to make a fire, but I decide against it as it will probably attract other people. By the time I climb back down, eat 2 pieces of jerky and climb in my sleeping bag, the sun has already set, and it quickly becomes so dark that I can barely see my orange backpack which is only half a metre away. I close my eyes and think about how well I have done today. I wake up before the sunrise and I collect my gear. I place my Akubra hat on my head and walk towards the clump of rainforest in the distance. I walk for hours through the bush stopping only to have food and water. Around midday, the heat becomes unbearable, and I must stop under a dead tree. I am covered in sweat! I wait for hours until it begins to cool down and then I set off again towards the promise of water. At about midnight I run out of water, and I begin to slow down. Many hours later, I see something close by. “Water!”, I think, as I increase my speed to a slow jog. I run for a few minutes but after a while the water turns to sand, and I realise that it was a mirage. Slowly my vision gets blurry, and I stumble a few metres before tripping over a rock and face plant into the earth. I don’t have the energy to lift myself up, so I lie still in the mud. Mud! I realise and I slowly rise to my knees. I am so dehydrated that I must crawl to the source of water. After a minute I finally see the creek and I crawl into it, almost dead. I take small sips of the creek water, praying that I won’t get sick while I fill up my bottle. I take 2 water purification tablets from my pack, and I drop them into the water. I wait for what seems like hours for the tablets to dissolve before guzzling down half of it. I refill it and then I lie there for an hour, finally feeling safe.
