This is the backstory for Sunken Treasures “Maria!” My mom called. Ugh. ‘Maria’. I hate that name. I guess it's my fault not finding a name for myself yet. “Coming Mom!” I yelled, trotting downstairs. “Yes?” I asked. “Can you go and get some berries and water for lunch?” My mom asked. “Yea! Are you making pie?” I asked, excited. Blueberry pie was my jam! (No pun intended.) “Yes, Honey. Your favorite!” She exclaimed, pulling me in for a hug. “YESSS! Thanks!” I said pulling away. “Anything for my daughter.” She said as I walked out. I flinched as I grabbed the basket. To her I'm still her daughter. Her baby girl… And I know the truth… I'm not a boy or girl. Im nonbiary… I know that she wouldn’t care, but I was still scared… But I need to stop thinking about it. I started to take my usual path to the river after getting the blueberries, but the giant meadow for wildflowers distracted me. I ran over to the edge of the meadow, I peered down below and saw it was a steep hill. At the top of the hill I looked out and saw the view. The sky was a bright vibrant baby blue, with a few scattered clouds. And the air was sweet and crisp. All the wildflowers must have bloomed a while ago, because they were plump and stood tall. “Well… It won't hurt to pick some flowers for Mom and Mama. And you know I’ve gotta roll down! Just once!” I set the blueberries I had collected and set them on the side, under a tree. I crouched down low, like I was stalking a rabbit. And leaped, I curled into a ball and rolled down the hill. I might have been screaming, but I didn’t care! This was some of the most fun I had in a while. But at some point I was in mid air, soaring through the crisp wind. Then… PLAP! I hit water. I screamed as I hit the water, then I started to sink. I was kicking and flailing as I tried to reach the surface. But it was no luck, I was gonna die. So at some point I accepted my fate and let myself sink, slowly losing consciousness. *** “Hello? Cat? Are you alive? Wait… Lemme try something…” SLAP! I woke up laying down on a rock. “AH! What the? OH MY GOSH! ARE YOU A MERCAT?” I yelled. I was in fact right to assume that this was a mercat. Why? Well they had fins, webbed claws, and the cherry on top. A mercat tail. Then I noticed I was wet to the bone, my fur clinging to my skin like peanut-butter on the roof of your mouth. “Yea!” They answered. “Wait… ” I said, thinking about what happened on the hill, “Shouldn’t I be dead? Like… I was drowning. AM I DEAD?” “Oh! Yea I saved you!” The mercat said, their tail splashing in the water. “Really? Wow! Thank you!” I said happily.
