Whenever a surge happens, we go back to school and learn about everyone who d!3d. When everyone was told the surge was somewhat over and that adults could go to work and children could go to school, Mother rushed out the door. She had said that a few of the new white roses were dy!ng when she left work the day before The Surge started. She leaves early a lot. I’m used to it. I’m alright. If you think about it gravely, Mother really never talks to me. She hasn’t been much of a talker since Ellie went missing and Dad went loco. But hey, I haven’t been talking that much myself, so who am I, talking about Mother like that. While I’m eating my soggy cheerios, the doorbell rings. I tell myself it can’t be Mother because she looked very frantic when she ran to work. I look out the peephole. Oh no, it’s Coletta Skim. I sigh and open the door. “Hey! Are you ready to walk to school?” she asks me. I nod and sleepily shove everything in my backpack, including my ph0ne. She waits at the door and asks me where Mother got the flowers in our front yard. “She owns 'All In Bloom Flower Arrangements',” I mumble. Coletta keeps smiling. I nudge her out of the way and trudge out the door. I lock it with my key and start walking to Will Creek Middle Sch00l alongside Coletta. ------ next chapter will be posted soon!!
