The sunlight nearly blinds me when I wake up on a normal Saturday morning. The birds chirp and I open my eyes, staring up at the wooden ceiling in the upstairs loft. I'm Lola McHansen, I'm twelve, and I live in the wilderness. My Mother says it's because she wanted to get away from city life, but I know better. My parents are hiding something, and I want to figure it out. When I was born, my Family moved from Utah to Colorado in search of a good home. Mother says Father quit his job at the post office, but I have a feeling he got fired. The smell of eggs brings me away from my thoughts and I get out of bed and start walking downstairs. We have a small cabin up in the rocky mountains. Father said he built it himself. Mother tells me they bought it for a very good price. I don't know who to believe anymore. Our cabin has small spiral stairs that shake when you use them. The floor is freezing cold, too cold for my fluffy socks to even help- so I put on some sneakers. My older sister Amanda is sitting at the wooden table, her eyes fixed on the TV. She doesn't notice me when I walk in. She's sixteen years old. My eight year-old brother doesn't seem to be up yet. Not surprised. Oscar always sleeps on the weekends. Mother welcomes me with a smile. "Good morning Lola!" She says, smiling. Her brown hair is pulled back into a bun. I look around, not seeing Father. Mother notices my confusion and she steers me to the table. "He went out to get more groceries." She said, handing me a plate full of eggs. I raise an eyebrow but began eating. Mother goes upstairs to get Oscar. Mandy looks up at me for the first time this morning. "Hi." She says, turning back to her eggs. Her dog Blizzard wags his tail. He's really a wolf, but Mandy found him injured deep in the forest. After helping him out, Blizzard has been her friend ever since then. "Hi." I say, smiling. After finishing my food, I go upstairs to get dressed. I know exactly what to do today.
