When I finally wake up, the car is pulling into a parking lot somewhere in Oakville. I look out my window, seeing a neat brick house with a small porch. "What is this place, Mommy?" Oscar asks, his voice full of fear, confusion, and curiosity all at the same time. Mother parks the car and turns it off. She looks back at us. "This is Aunt Gwen's house. She's letting me borrow it. "Borrow it?" I ask. "How can you do THAT?" Mandy groans, taking out her headphones and setting down her Ipod. "I don't want to live with Aunt Gwen." She mutters. "She's a Karen." Mother frowns. "What? And anyway, she's not even here. She has a nice house up in Bridgemont, the town near here." She smiles. "Your Aunt is very wealthy." "Then why aren't we?" The question shoots out of my mouth before I can stop it. Guilt ripples through me as Mother gawks at me. "What?" She asks. Mandy opens the car door. "What are we waiting for? Let's go." She shoots me a glance that says, you're welcome. She gets her bags out of the trunk and hauls it up to the front steps. Stooping down, she lifts up the door mat and pulls out some golden keys. She nods at us. Mother forgets my question completely and gets out her suitcase as well, helping Oscar get his too. I grab my bags and get out of the car so Mother can lock it, then head up the front steps of my Aunt's house. What are we doing here?
