this story is called she is not my mother enjoy chapter 1 ‘Good morning, sweetheart!’ came the sweet, sickening voice of my not-mother, as my blinds were ripped open. I could feel the ground quake as my not-mother stomped over to my bed, doing all she could to wake me from my deep sleep. I groaned, lifting the covers over my head. It was hot and barely breathable under my spider-man quilt, but I’d rather suffocate to death than listen to my not-mother. Not-mother snatched the blanket from my grasp in an opprobrious way. ‘Wake up, sleepyhead.’ she smiled, the sight of her face making me revolt. The nicknames she gave me made my stomach churn until my face turned green with illness. ‘You are not my mother,’ I mumbled under my breath, ‘So stop acting like it.’ Though I thought the mumble was inaudible, my not-mother still frowned, displeased with my words. ‘Odeya,’ she said, voice sharp as ice. ‘We’ve had this conversation before. I am your mother, whether you like it or not.’ My not-mother was a short, plump woman with pepper colored hair. Her eyes were as blue as the ocean, and they pierced into my soul. Cold dread ran up my spine. Something about her made me shiver—besides the fact that she pretended to be my mother. Though I wanted to yell at her, put her in her place, I kept my mouth from moving in the direction of a frown. ‘I.. I’m sorry,’ I mumbled obediently, though her draconian lies made me angry. She locked eyes with me, her cold blue gaze stabbing into me. She wanted me to say it. She wanted me to say the word that I had sworn to never call her. ‘Ma’am.’ I did not break my oath. I would never, in my days of living, call her my mother. A mother is loving, kind, and compassionate. Not-mother was harsh, fake, and a liar. My not-mother gave me a cold stare. And although she didn’t complain, or force me to call her my mother, her gaze said it all. ‘I made you a bagel.’ Not-mother said, posture more stiff now. She walked out of the room promptly, not looking back to smile at me as she usually did. I had really made her mad this time - and I didn’t even care.
